Contributors
Aaron Witzke, an Ed 2 volunteer living in the hills of Rutsiro District. He studied Religion at a small liberal arts school, Drury University. When in the US he enjoys ultimate frisbee, fly fishing, barbecuing, and playing poker. Here he enjoys
relaxing near lake Kivu and creating different foods with the same ingredients.
Allison Radke, an Education 2 PCV, works in Bugesera District in the Eastern Province. Originally from Wisconsin, she enjoyed spending her childhood summers swimming in Lake Superior. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in Spanish and Social Work. Allison’s interests include singing, listening to VOA, reading, laughing, and teaching her students songs.
Alma Aldrich
Andrew Kinton, an English teacher in S1 & S2. He lives in the Northern Province, Rulindo District, Kinihira sector. He likes long walks on the beach and romantic dinners. . . .not really. He likes to play sports and take all day hiking treks
in the mountains near his village. He enjoys luke-warm Primus occasionally and his favorite food in Rwanda is grilled corn-on-the-cob at Nyirangarama smothered in urusenda sauce for ijana. His proudest accomplishment is teaching 90% of the
students at their primary and secondary school to say “Good Afternoon” and “What’s up”.
Arielle Mancuso hails from the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State. She is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Canada with an honors degree in International Development Studies and Biochemistry (don’t ever ask her why). As an avid traveler and student of the world, she decided to sign up for the ultimate experience, Peace Corps, whenshe finished school and didn’t know what else to do. For over two years, she lived in the small town of Kiramuruzi in the Eastern Province and worked for Plan International in Rwanda, managing and providing support to projects targeting children and youth. She enjoys sewing and also spent the last two years creating an igitenge wardrobe by hand. Look for her in Kigali; she usually stands out dressed in one of her handmade outfits.
Christine Hooyman
Claire Brosnihan
Daniel Serwon, an education 2 PCV who lives in Mulindi with health 2 PCV Devin Johnson (who is terrified of demon possession, by the way). He also lives with Kibirinka Irene, their cat Koboyi, and a sweetheart of an umukozi, Anualita, who pretends to be sick. Dan hosts Pinoxo, the cat who belongs to PCV Lucy Sung, when school is out. Whether it is Meddy, Simon, or someone else, Devin and Dan always seem to have company. Dan’s personal hero is Mark Zuckerberg for stealing everyone else’s ideas. Because Dan is not very creative, either, he would do the same thing given the opportunity. Dan also really likes getting his feet really disgusting when he comes home because he wants to give Anualita something to do.
Deanne Witzke is an Ed 2 volunteer teaching the rascals of Rutsiro. She studied Criminology and Psychology at Drury University, and was a case manager working with homeless people after college. She loves market mamas, falling down during yoga, the case box of clothes exchange, and snocones.
Genevieve Williams, an education 2 PCV, lives in Musanze District where she teaches English at G.S. Kabere School. She up and joined the Peace Corps a couple months after graduating from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology), New York State with a BFA in Professional Photo-graphic Illustration in May 2010. Gene-vieve enjoys eating isombe, being outside, and ap-preciating the rare moments when she can sleep in. Occasionally, she will cover a dirty pop song or two on the ukulele and wants to know if you have any suggestions. She has fallen in love with almost every person she has met in Rwanda, treasures the adventures they have given her, and cannot wait for the adventures to come.
Heather Bing was born and raised in Big Sky, Montana. She lives in the South of Rwanda, in a village called Mamba. She enjoys the out-doors: running, skiing, and swimming. She loves receiving yambis (hugs) from small children in her village.
Heather Newell
Ian Reed Ross, an Ed 2 volunteer living in faraway Cyangugu. He enjoys learning karate at the local dojo, writing in his blog, and eating rice and beans every day.
Joel Atwood
Lucy Sung is an education 2 PCV in Gicumbi district, Northern province. She hails from the city of Mexican tacos, frozen taro yogurt, and Lakers. She enjoys watching clouds roll down into her valley during the rainy season.
Mark Rodehorst is an education 2 PCV from New Orleans, Louisiana. His favorite herb is rosemary, he really likes pistachios, and if he were a cake, he would be a carrot cake.
Matthew Beamer hails from Casper, Wyoming, where he grew up with two younger brothers and a younger sister. After earning degrees in Math and French at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT and loafing for a year, he joined the
Peace Corps, ready for anything. He doesn’t get to cook much in Rwanda, but he loves it when he does, and he’s looking forward to getting back home and amazing people with his ability to cook anything in four hours over a charcoal stove.
Megan Haggerty Foster is a health 3 PCV Oregon. Her site is Kitabi in Nyamagabe district, right outside of the rain forest. She likes macaroni and cheese filled packages, taking an excessive number of pictures, and wandering through the tea plantation covered hillsides.
Meghan Costello, an Education 2 volunteer, living in Nyanza district. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Political Science, minoring in Peace Studies. She teaches English Com-munication, General Paper, and computer studies, and likes working with her afterschool English and GLOW club. She loves the way the mamas that we taught in Musanze wrote, "I am" as "Ayamu," and she・s always up to boogie.
Mimi Chuong is an Ed 2 volunteer. She works in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province. She likes to eat, drink, and draw.
